Forbes: How Opioid Abuse Contributes To Rising Healthcare Costs

As the opioid epidemic in the United States continues taking lives across the nation, it’s also contributing to rising healthcare costs for taxpayers.

Published in the May issue of the journal Health Affairs, a new retrospective cohort study revealed that hospitalizations related to opioid abuse/dependence rose significantly from 301,707 in 2002 to 520,275 in 2012, an increase of 72%.
